John Bellany R.A. C.B.E. (1942 - )
Bellany was born in Port Seton in Scotland. Bellany
was surrounded by the images of his family's trades of fishermen and boat
builders . His paintings feature harbours and people that make a living from
working the seas
He attended the Royal College of
Art, London, where he studied under Carel Weight and Peter de Francia from 1965
to 1968
In 1986 he became the first
artist to have a one-man show in the National Portrait Gallery, London.
He has exhibited throughout Europe and America.
Bellany is regarded as one of the greatest Scottish
Painters of the Modern era, his works can be seen in major galleries of The
Museum of Modern Art, New York (MOMA), The Metropolitan Museum, New York and The
Tate Gallery, Britain.
Bellany was elected Fellow of
Trinity Hall, Cambridge in 1988 and in 1994 was awarded the CBE. He went on to
be given an Honorary Doctorate by the University of Edinburgh in 1996 and an
Honorary D Lit by Heriot Watt, University of Edinburgh in 1998. He was elected
RA in 1991 (ARA 1986), Honorary Member of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1986,
and in 1998 was made a Senior Fellow of the Royal College of Art, London. John
Bellany lives and works in Cambridge, Edinburgh and Barga, Italy.
